When I was thirteen, my family visited Kalbarri on a holiday to Western Australia. The highlight was abseiling into the Murchison River Gorge. The lowlight of the trip was being forced to memorise the Latin names for three different types of wildflowers as I sulked in the heat of the national park.
Perhaps I would have shown more appreciation for the landscape had I been able to stand and gaze out from one of the two skywalks built in 2015. Alas, the construction happened long after my time. However, if I ever take my children there, I will stand on the skywalk knowing the 25 metre extension over the spectacular gorge was anchored into solid rock by Fortec using a minimal impact drilling rig, and both it and the other skywalk were designed to fit into the natural environment.
And even if our rope anchors aren’t quite as secure as the ground anchors for the skywalks, I’ll still take them abseiling. I won’t, however, make them memorise Latin names for the native flora.
