Jacobs asks “what if” things could be improved?

Some of their projects are much closer to home, however, like the new M4 Smart Motorway in Western Sydney. This development is designed to provide motorists with a smoother and more reliable journey to work and back home again, reducing stress and increasing safety for road users.
Jacobs studied existing infrastructure and systems throughout Greater Sydney and modelled future performance to best determine how technology could improve various roads, including the M4, turning it from a regular motorway to a smart motorway.
What is a Smart Motorway?
It’s 35 km of traffic sensors embedded in the road every 500 metres. It’s entry ramp signals that update quickly to adjust to traffic. It’s gantries that can open and close lanes to divert vehicles around incidents and keep them flowing, as well as new electronic signs to warn approaching traffic of travel conditions and times before they get on the motorway.
Any defensive driving instructor will tell you that reaction time is critical when it comes to safe road use. Systems that monitor and react swiftly across a coordinated area will definitely benefit those who rely on this motorway all the time.
